Some might ask what Health Tourism is.  Simply put, health tourism (medical tourism, medical travel) is when people travel to other countries for medical services.  Some might think that this is a new practice but this has actually been in practice for many years dating back thousands of years.  We have always traveled for health care, be it to the city to visit a specialist or flying to another town for specialized treatment.  The only difference is that we now have options to extend the distances to other countries.

 Many insurance companies prefer sending a patient to another country for major surgery because it is cheaper in another country.  Some might ask if the quality is worse because of the price.  An honest and relevant question indeed; the reality is that sometimes we get better medical services and facilities in cheaper countries.  The doctors have first world education and training but the cost of the facilities and the cost of living in those countries are far less than most first world countries so it is cheaper on the overall both for you and for insurance companies.  Many professionals actually travel to other countries to perform medical services there.

For example, having a route cannel treatment done in California could cost close to $1000, having the same thing done in India, could cost less than $100, this of course excludes the travel costs.  Heart surgery in one country could cost hundreds of thousands of Dollars while in others it could cost only a fraction of that.

Health tourism includes many other fields like the SPA industry.  Although going to a SPA is not exactly medical treatment it is still some form of treatment.  The hotel industries all over the world are getting into this market because most travelling involves the need for accommodation as well. 

Some recreational activities like sports and activities also fall under the heading.
